The material you choose affects much more than the appearance of a CNC-cut component. Thickness, sheet construction, surface finish and the way the part will be used all influence the final result.
MDF
MDF provides a consistent surface and is widely used for painted furniture, cabinetry components, templates and interior applications. The appropriate thickness depends on span, load, edge treatment and the final assembly.
Plywood
Plywood is made from bonded layers and can offer a different balance of strength, weight and visible edge character. The grade and intended application should be considered alongside thickness.
Choosing thickness
A thicker board is not automatically the best board. Consider the component’s structural role, fixings, joints, edge details, weight and surrounding parts. A design prepared for one thickness may need adjustment if the material changes.
Sheet size and nesting
Available sheet dimensions affect how many parts can be placed and therefore influence material use and price. Part spacing, border margins and any rotation restrictions must also be respected during nesting.
Before ordering
Select the intended material and thickness in the CNC request and submit the actual production drawing where possible. Availability and final machining requirements are reviewed before production is confirmed.
